BLS reports 1,064 construction workplace fatalities in 2024 and a total recordable injury and illness rate of 2.2 cases per 100 full-time workers. The fatality count fell from 1,099 in 2023. These figures describe the construction industry, NAICS 23; they are not a count of all accidents, OSHA citations or deaths among every worker with a construction occupation.

What changed between 2023 and 2024?
The displayed fatality count decreased by 35, or approximately 3.2%: (1,064 − 1,099) ÷ 1,099 × 100. This is OSHA Finder’ calculation from the two BLS counts. It measures a change in the number of deaths, not a change in a workforce-adjusted fatality rate.
A count shows how many deaths were recorded in the industry. A rate accounts for an exposure measure such as hours worked. A lower count alone does not tell us how the probability of a fatal event changed for an individual worker.
Construction injuries and OSHA violations answer different questions
The separate FY2025 Federal OSHA construction profile ranks cited standards. It is useful for examining enforcement patterns. It cannot explain every cause of the BLS injury total, and its reporting window differs from the calendar-year statistics above.
For example, the prominence of fall-protection citations does not justify assigning the same percentage of construction fatalities to falls. That would require a compatible fatal-event table. Similarly, a citation does not necessarily follow an accident: inspections can arise in different circumstances.
Use a consistent comparison
When comparing these figures with another industry, keep the year, unit and measure fixed. Compare total recordable cases with total recordable cases, not with DART or a citation count. Our industry injury-rate comparison places construction, manufacturing and warehousing in one labeled table.
For a company presentation, retain the source link and NAICS code beside each statistic. Add the date you checked it. If your audience asks about a particular establishment, move from industry statistics to the official company-record search. Industry totals cannot establish the condition of an individual site.
